Police arrest man over rape of nursing mother in Edo

A 19-year-old man identified as Peter, has been arrested by the Police for allegedly raping a nursing mother at aAgenebode in Estako East Local Government Area of Edo State
.

He was said to have raped his victim, who was staying with her mother after delivery through caesarian operation three months ago.

Peter, who was said to be living in the same neighbourhood with the victim, was reportedly beaten to pulp before being handed over to the police.

He was to have gained access to the victim's room through the window and grabbed her baby whom he threatened to kill if the mother did not succumb to him.

Following Peter's threat, the victim reportedly succumbed and  cried out after the rapist had run away.

"I was sleeping when I heard a noise. The boy shone light on my face, took my baby and turned him upside down. I begged him but he insisted I should allow him and to save my baby I agreed," the victim, who pleaded anonymity, said.

The victim's cry was said to have attracted neighbours, who used the footprints of the rapist to trace him to his apartment.

He was seen trying to get into his apartment when angry community members descended on him.

During interrogation, the suspect told journalists that he went to the apartment at about 4a.m. and committed the act, adding that he did not know what came over him.

Confirming the report yesterday, Edo Police Command's spokesman, Noble Uwoh said investigations were on over the incident.
